How PayPal Express Checkout works?

PayPal express is available in many countries globally. For this reason and because of its simplicity, it is a very popular choice.

PayPal Express Checkout gives your customers a simplified checkout experience. Users remain on your website or mobile app throughout the payment authorization process. They can use their PayPal balance, bank account or credit card to pay without sharing or entering any sensitive information on your site.

Another great advantage is that there are no set up or subscription fees. You only pay when you make a sale or receive a payment. Adding this as an additional option can reduce your cart abandonment rates because many still prefer to pay with PayPal.

Here is the step-by-step process of how PayPal Express works:

  1. Your customer clicks the PayPal button in the shopping cart on your Shopify store.
  2. The checkout process begins in a lightbox that overlays your website or in a mobile browser.
    1. Your customer logs in to PayPal.
    2. They review and authorize the payment.
  3. Your customer returns to the parent window or mobile app to finalize the payment.

Adding PayPal to Shopify

Shopify makes adding PayPal to your store simple. The entire set up process takes place in Settings in your Shopify store admin area. You can even set up PayPal Express Checkout without a PayPal account.

To add PayPal to Shopify:

  1. Login in to your Shopify store.
  2. Go to Setting > Payments.

  1. All the options available in your country display in the dropdown menu.

Adding PayPal Express Checkout

To add PayPal Express Checkout:

  1. Go to Settings > Payments.
  2. Select PayPal Express Checkout in the dropdown in the PayPal box. This option requires a PayPal Business account. If you do not have one, you will be able to create one during the process.
  3. Click Activate.
  4. In the secure PayPal browser window:
    1. Sign up for a new PayPal Business account, or
    2. Login to your PayPal Business account.


  1. Click I Give Permission to grant PayPal the necessary permissions to enable PayPal Express Checkout. You can revoke permissions at any time directly in Shopify.

  2. Click Go back to Shopify to be return to your Shopify admin area.

Adding PayPal Website Payments Pro

If PayPal Website Payments Pro is available in your country you can enable this option in your Shopify admin area. PayPal Payments Pro includes PayPal Express Checkout and allows your customers to pay by credit card in your Shopify store. This option also support recurring payments.

To enable PayPal Website Payments Pro:

  1. Go to Settings > Payments.
  2. Select the relevant PayPal Website Payments Pro for your country in the dropdown in the PayPal box.
    1. Use test mode: Enable this option during testing. While enabled, test transactions are simulated and the cards used are not charged.
    2. Merchant Login / Vendor: Enter your PayPal Payments Pro account email.
    3. Password: Enter your PayPal Payments Pro password.
    4. User: Enter a username if there is more than one user enabled on your account.
  3. Click Activate.

Deactivating PayPal in Shopify

You can deactivate an activated PayPal option in your Shopify admin area at any time.

To deactivate PayPal:

  1. Go to Settings > Payments.
  2. In the PayPal box click Edit to make the Deactivate button visible
  3. Click Deactivate.


  1. Click Deactivate in the confirmation dialog. Shopify will save your PayPal details to ease reactivation at a later date.


  1. PayPal is now deactivated, and the PayPal options are once again ready for activation.
